A method to assess algicidal activity of microalgal extracts coupling microalgae produced in stirred closed photobioreactor operating in continuous with pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry ArchiMer
Menguy, Eva; Dumontet, Vincent; Coulombier, Noémie; Meriot, Vincent; Le Dean, Loic; Barthelemy, Vanille; Jauffrais, Thierry.
We describe in the present study a quick and reliable method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence to assess putative algicidal effect of different microalgal extracts. We couple microalgal production under chemostat cultivation mode to continuously produce a given microalgae species (e.g. Dunaliella salina in this study) at a stable physiological state to ease comparison between extracts tested; with a non-destructive method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry was used to assess over time the effect of different microalgal crude extracts on the efficiency of the photosystem II (PSII) of a tested microalgae (Dunaliella salina). • Microalgal production at stationary phase in stirred closed photobioreactor (PBR)...

A revision of Eupatorium (Compositae: Eupatorieae) from Michoacan Phyton
Garcia Sanchez,E; Ramirez Lopez,CB; del Rio Torres,REN; Martinez Pacheco,MM.
An important study in species of the genus Eupatorium, that inhabits other parts of the world, was conducted in the search for new molecules with pharmacological activities, thus showing that it is a potential source of novel secondary metabolites. We reviewed the number of Eupatorium species that have been described in the State of Michoacan, and that can be available for harvesting, to make a phytochemical screening. It was found that 69 Eupatorium spp are growing in 69% of the Michoacan territory. Within this group there are ten species used in Mexican traditional medicine. It was evident the difficulty in taxonomic classifying these species since several Eupatorium spp have synonyms. It appeared that the number of native members should be reduced in...

ABSTRACT Solidago chilensis Meyen, belonging to the family Asteraceae, is a plant native to South America and the only representative of the genus in Brazil. This species is popularly known as “arnica” and is used to treat bruises, muscle pain and inflammation. The objective of this work was to contribute to the pharmacognostic standardization of S. chilensis. Cross-sections were obtained, by freehand, for microscopic analysis of root, stem and leaf; for these parts of the plant maceration was also performed according to the method of Jeffrey. For the leaf were still made paradermal sections, scanning electron microscopy analysis, phytochemical and histochemical tests. Thus, it was determined anatomical features useful for diagnosis of the species which,...

Biological properties of medicinal plants: a review of their antimicrobial activity J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Silva,NCC; Fernandes Júnior,A.
Plants have been used for thousands of years to flavor and conserve food, to treat health disorders and to prevent diseases including epidemics. The knowledge of their healing properties has been transmitted over the centuries within and among human communities. Active compounds produced during secondary vegetal metabolism are usually responsible for the biological properties of some plant species used throughout the globe for various purposes, including treatment of infectious diseases. Currently, data on the antimicrobial activity of numerous plants, so far considered empirical, have been scientifically confirmed, concomitantly with the increasing number of reports on pathogenic microorganisms resistant to antimicrobials. Products derived from plants may...

Can the Apparency Hypothesis explain the selection of medicinal plants in an area of caatinga vegetation? A chemical perspective Acta Botanica
Alencar,Nélson Leal; Araújo,Thiago Antonio de Sousa; Amorim,Elba Lúcia Cavalcanti de; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino de.
This scientific note examines the ability of the apparency hypothesis to explain the selection of medicinal plants by members of a rural community located in the Caatinga dryland region of Pernambuco state. A total of 61 plants considered to be medicinal were examined phytochemically to test the premises of this hypothesis. It was concluded that apparency does not completely explain our findings.

γ-oryzanol, a phytochemical, has antioxidant activities and potential health benefits. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for extracting high amounts of γ-oryzanol from rice bran and for verifying its stability in different solvents. Of the 5 methods under investigation, the one that yielded the highest γ-oryzanol content was further improved by using a central composite rotational design (DCCR - 2(4), including 8 tests in axial conditions and 4 central points, totaling 28 trials). The parameters under study were temperature, time, volume, and the ratio of hexane:isopropanol. High γ-oryzanol content (13.98 mg.g-1) was obtained by using the following extraction conditions: 40° C, 40 min, and 75 mL hexane:isopropanol (1:3). The limits of detection...

Principaux taxons ligneux de la cosmétopée tropicale : une analyse bibliographique ArchiMer
Ansel, Jean-luc; Butaud, Jean-francois; Raharivelomanana, Phila.
"Cosmetopoiea" refers to popular uses of plants for traditional cosmetic and body care that have always existed in many countries and cultures over the world since centuries, but this concept is still very poorly documented under the form of written reports. We report herein on a first assessment on cosmetopoiea from tropical regions, which consists in reviewing the available literature data (related to ethnobotany and pharmacopoeia) in order to highlight the tropical trees and the taxa mostly used in traditional cosmetic or dermatology and, for some of them, treated as examples, to describe briefly their chemical composition and biological activities.

Studies on the biocidal and cell membrane disruption potentials of stem bark extracts of Afzelia africana (Smith) Biol. Res.
AKINPELU,DAVID A; AIYEGORO,AYOBAMI O; OKOH,ANTHONY I.
We had recently reported antibacterial activity in the crude extract of the stem bark of Afzelia africana (Akinpelu et al., 2008). In this study, we assessed the biocidal and cell membrane disruption potentials of fractions obtained from the crude extract of the plant. The aqueous (AQ) and butanol (BL) fractions exhibited appreciable antibacterial activities against the test bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the AQ and BL fractions ranged between 0.313 and 2.5 mg/ml, while their minimum bactericidal concentrations varied between 0.625 and 5.0 mg/ml. Also, the AQ fraction killed about 95.8% of E. coli cells within 105 min at a concentration of 5 mg/ml, while about 99.1% of Bacillus pumilus cells were killed by this fraction at the same...
